When applying to register with the CQC you must obtain a DBS check (formally a CRB check). DBS checks must be:-1. Enhanced
An enhanced DBS check includes all of the information provided within a standard check plus local police information which the police may believe is relevant. The police must reasonably believe that the information is relevant to the position the person is applying for. An enhanced check does not contain barred list information.
2. Countersigned by the CQC
All DBS checks must be countersigned by the CQC and these can be obtained via the Post Office CQC Disclosure Website. Failing to provide a countersigned DBS check will result in your application being rejected. You will then have to obtain a new DBS check which is an additional expense and can cause delays to your transaction.
Once you have applied online following the above link, you will be sent details in order to complete your DBS check application online – don’t worry, there is step by step guidance on the website.
Once the online application has been done, you will be given a referral letter along with a unique barcode for each ID document. You will then need to attend your local Post Office to show your ID documents and to make payment.
The Post Office will make a charge of £17.50 for the service, the full fee for making a DBS check application is £61.50 and this must be paid at the Post Office by cash or card.
3. Less than 12 months old on the date the forms are accepted by the CQC
Up until October 2017, DBS checks had to be less than 6 months old, however, CQC have now issued updated guidance and this time frame has been extended.
Who needs to apply for a DBS check?
You will need to apply for a DBS check if you are;
- Registering as an Individual Provider
- Registering as a Partnership – each member of the partnership will require a DBS check
- Registering as a Registered Manager
When registering for your DBS check you must ensure that you indicate that you will be working with both children (POCA) and vulnerable adults (POVA) where appropriate. Failure to do so can result in applications being rejected as a result of the wrong groups being applied for.
DBS checks usually take up to four weeks to be received however; this is only a rough guide. Timescales can depend on the time of year, if there is a backlog of applications and also where you are based in the country with London areas sometimes taking up to 10 weeks. Once you have received your DBS check you should store the original in a safe place. It is best to provide your solicitor with a copy rather than the original as your CQC assessor may request sight of the original at your CQC interview.
